Commentary: Frankly Speaking

Fran Peavey | June, 2002

Dear Fran,
Varanasi may be the holy city, but there are other places, too, which need attention. Can we not prioritize places according to the level of contamination in its waters?

Meihnaz

Dear Friend Meihnaz,
It would be interesting, indeed, to prioritize cities according to the severity of the pollution of their rivers-and then invest in good sewers and sewage treatment facilities in the cities most polluted.

Our Campaign believes that virtually all cities need to be mindful of the quality of their water. We are only working on behalf of Varanasi because it is our city. We feel that if the job is done beautifully in Varanasi it can be a model for others to emulate. Many pilgrims come to Varanasi; and then they can go home with a picture in their mind of a clean Ganga and work to have that picture replicated along the entire length of this glorious river and in other rivers in India and in the world.
